Homestyle Jamaican Fried Dumpling

Dumpling, Dumpling Dumpling! Fried, boiled, or even boiled then fried, dumplings are a tried and trued Jamaican staple. Homestyle Jamaican Fried Dumplings are a regular feature in a good ole country breakfast, a hearty meal designed to fuel a hard day’s work!

Fried dumplings are a light affair that is great as a breakfast or brunch side while their boiled counterparts are denser and usually forms part of the afternoon meal. Sometimes boiled dumplings will make an appearance at breakfast, but can make for a much heavier start to the day.

Ingredients

1 ¼ lb Flour

1 Tsp Baking Powder

½ Tsp Salt

1 oz Unsalted Butter

½ cup cold Water

3 Tbsp Vegetable Oil for frying

Method

  • In a bowl sift salt, baking powder and flour together
  • Add butter and combine with flour mix
Sift flour with salt and baking powder and mix in butter

  • Add water a little at a time and knead until fully combined to form a ball
    Cover with damp paper towel or wrap in plastic then set aside in refrigerator for at least ½ hour
  • Break apart ball and form into 6 small rounds then flatten between palms, don’t worry they will raise back up when heated.

  • Heat non-stick frying pan on medium heat  and add oil; heat for 2 minutes and add each dumpling careful not to splash oil.
  • Cover frying pan with lid and lower heat, fry for 10 minutes on each side until lightly browned.
